St Kilda forward Tim Membrey is among an important trio of Saints ruled out of their season opener as the injury toll continues to mount at Moorabbin.
The 28-year-old sharpshooter will miss after failing to recover in time from knee surgery in February following a training injury, with no return time confirmed.
Industrious midfielder Seb Ross is also expected to miss the round 1 clash against Fremantle, with the Saints saying he is “unlikely” to be available for selection due to a calf complaint.
In a further blow to St Kilda, luckless defender Nick Coffield suffered a calf strain at training late last week that will put him out for four to six weeks.
Acting Saints football boss David Misson said the club was disappointed for the 23-year-old, who missed the entire 2022 season with a torn ACL.
“Obviously, this is not an ideal situation to have Nick join the injury list, particularly after the difficult year he has had,” Misson said.
“In the case of Tim and Seb, we need to think longer term and make sure we’re not rushing them unnecessarily.”
Marcus Windhager (hand) and Max Heath (ankle) will be tested ahead of the Dockers clash, while the Saints have Leo Connolly available after he returned to full training following a knee injury.
The return of 2022 surprise package Jack Hayes has been delayed further, with the impressive forward-ruck’s recovery from his foot injury “progressing slower than expected”, St Kilda said.
Hayes has been listed as 10 to 12 weeks away from an AFL return.
