State of Origin: Will Phil ‘Gus’ Gould do a ‘Last Word’ speech before Game 1?

Phil Gould’s Last Word speeches prior to a State of Origin game truly are a thing of beauty.

The legendary coach, administrator and commentator became synonymous with the NSW vs QLD rivalry during the 2000s and 2010s, where his trademark passionate speeches would excite fans at the ground and watching at home.

Channel Nine stopped using Gus and his rev-up speeches a few years ago, but it returned during the 2021 series to great fanfare.

Unfortunately, the series opener of 2022 won’t have a Phil Gould speech, with the Bulldogs head of football confirming the news via social media hours prior to kickoff.

The absence of a ‘Last Word’ speech is coupled by the absence of Ray Warren, who announced his retirement prior to Game 1.

If you’re feeling the void of Gould’s speech tonight, we’ve got you covered with some of his all-time classics below.

The series opener between the Blues and Maroons will kick off at 8.10pm on Wednesday night.
