NRL finals news 2022, Roosters vs Rabbitohs, Latrell Mitchell urged to maintain the rage

Former league bad boy Mark Geyer has urged Souths’ star fullback Latrell Mitchell to maintain the rage in Sunday’s elimination final against the Roosters.

Mitchell was baited and booed by Roosters fans when the teams met last week and eventually lost his cool, becoming the most sin-binned player in the game’s history when sent off for 10 minutes late in the game.

The enigmatic star is certain to be targeted again – and can expect some niggle from Roosters hardmen Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Matt Lodge.

But Geyer – no stranger to the sin bin himself back in the 1990s – believes Mitchell can’t afford to take a backward step if Souths are to stay alive beyond Sunday’s game.

“He is in a difficult situation because he will be singled out for sure and he does have a bit of a temper,” Geyer told Wide World of Sports.

“But when it could be your last game of the season you’ve gotta initiate certain hostilities and not back down.

“The trick is to come up with the right balance – to be aggressive but not fall foul of the referee.”

Mitchell won back-to-back premierships with the Roosters but fans are still angry over the ugly high shot he put on star centre Joseph Manu that shattered his ckeekbone last season.
