David Fifita ruled out for a month with MCL sprain, leaving Origin chances hanging by a thread

David Fifita will miss the next four weeks after the Titans confirmed the extent of the Queensland Origin star’s knee injury.

Fifita received a blow to his knee in the first half of the 14-point loss to the Panthers on Friday, succumbing to the injury late in the second half and being taken from the field.

The 22-year-old was sent for scans on Saturday, which confirmed he has sustained a grade two MCL sprain.

It means Fifita will miss the next four weeks for the Gold Coast, in another agonising blow amidst the club’s run of four straight losses.

The knee injury also places severe doubt around Fifita’s Origin chances, with the expected return in round 12 to only realistically give him a week to prove his fitness before Maroons coach Billy Slater names his team for Game 1.

Meanwhile, the Titans have also revealed centre Patrick Herbert suffered a fracture to his left cheekbone against Penrith.

Herbert is awaiting the opinion of a specialist to determine the full extent and expected recovery of the facial injury.
