Daniel Ricciardo could hold the future of Haas’ Mick Schumacher in his hands, depending on where he ends up next season.

Already accepting he’ll be out of a car next year, Ricciardo is still being heavily linked to a move to Mercedes as a reserve driver for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, although nothing is in concrete as yet.

But while Ricciardo’s future is still be decided, he may well be the first domino to fall as he potential holds Mick Schumacher’s fate in his hot little hand.

Schumacher has long been linked with an exit from Haas as Nico Hulkenberg’s return to the grid has long been rumoured, leaving the son of arguably the greatest driver of all-time out in the cold.

Haas boss Guenther Steiner revealed during the constructor’s press conference a choice had been made and that it would be revealed during the week.

If Schumacher is without a seat, there is a potential move however – reserve driver…at Mercedes.

Ricciardo is believed to be tossing up a move to Mercedes or back to Red Bull. With the latter, he would be an attractive option next to Max Verstappen if Sergio Perez doesn’t impress.

Auto Motor und Sport’s Michael Schmidt said if Ricciardo turns his back on Mercedes, Schumacher would be Mercedes’ “first choice”.

“For Schumacher, a reserve driver contract with a team that’s third in the World Championship would not be a step backwards but sideways,” he believes. “He may learn more there than with a small team in racing.

“And he would also be the reserve driver for most of the Mercedes customer teams. Only Aston Martin have a reserve driver from their own ranks in 2023.

“The example of Nyck de Vries shows that with so many options, it can quickly become a racing seat again.”

However, this all hinges on Ricciardo’s decision.
