Boxing 2022: Floyd Mayweather def Mikuru Asakura, fans lose it over flower dumping stunt in exhibition fight, result

Floyd Mayweather has easily defeated Japanese mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura in their exhibition boxing fight on Sunday.

The boxing legend said the fight was going to be an “easy payday, easy cheque, easy opponent” — and he proved to be right, barely breaking a sweat.

Asakura landed some solid body shots against a very relaxed Mayweather, who eased into the fight and frequently smiled at his opponent.

But the American turned up the heat in the second round, landing a series of blows on Asakura and dropping him with a strong right hand.

His opponent didn’t last the standing eight count and the referee stopped the fight, handing Mayweather an easy victory via TKO.

There were bizarre scenes just before the fight when a man — who appeared to be an official dignitary of sorts — went to hand Mayweather a bouquet of flowers but instead dumped them at his feet.

Mayweather wasn’t phased by the theatrics — calmly picking up the flowers off the ground and handing them to his team.

But the unusual flower stunt had viewers and boxing fans lost for words.

Commentator Joe Ferraro said: “That’s interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before in Japan.”

Damien Brown added: “Didn’t see that coming. Never (seen that). It’s the traditional handing of the flowers, a respectful thing, maybe there’s some games being played.”

Combat sports writer Daniel Yanofky tweeted: “The guy who was supposed to hand the flowers to Mayweather just dropped them in front of Floyd. That was weird, right?

“Mayweather had no idea how to react.”

Sporting News’ Andreas Hale said: “Instead of handing the honorary flowers to Mayweather before the fight, they threw them at his feet in a form of disrespect. I don’t think that’s going to help Mikuru. It might expedite the ass whoopin.”

The fight only lasted two rounds but Mayweather will reportedly earn up to USD$20 million for his troubles.

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao was watching ringside at Saitama Super Arena, just north of Tokyo, and Mayweather paid tribute to his longtime rival after the fight.

Mayweather is reportedly close to agreeing a rematch with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

The two met in a much-hyped boxing match in 2017, with Mayweather winning by a 10th-round technical knockout to retire with a perfect 50-0 record.
